Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington DC
|
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located in the Constitution Gardens across from the National Mall, Washington DC. The Memorial is both a tribute to the soldiers lost in the Vietnam War as well as a sober reminder of the cost of war.
The Memorial itself is made up of three parts, the Three Soldiers Statue, The Womens Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. The Memorial was completed in 1982.
The most recognizable part of the Memorial is the Wall. The Memorial Wall is really two 246 foot black granite walls, 10 foot high. The Black Ganite from India was chosen for its shiny reflective qualities.
The Three Soldiers is a bronze statue revealed in 1984 to commemorate the unity of the three races of American Society which served and died in the Vietnam War. It is said that the statue faces the Wall on purpose, so they appear to pay tribute to their fallen comrades.
The Womens Memorial was unveiled in 1993, It pays tribute to the American women that played a huge part in the Vietnam War. Woman at that time mostly served in the armed forces as nurses.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Washington DC
|
The Jefferson Memorial is a tribute to the third President of the United States. Jefferson was not only a great President, but a diplomat, inventor, scientist as well as an architect, musician and horticulture.
The Jefferson Memorial is located within the National Mall, and was designed by John Russell Pope. Pope incorporated many of Jefferson own designs with tributes to such buildings as Monticello and the Rotunda. Pope's design was also influenced by the Pantheon of Rome, which reflects Jeffersons awe of Roman architecture. Pope never lived to see his finished design as he died before the first cornerstone was laid in 1939. The Memorial was officially dedicated in 1943 on the 200th Anniversary of Jeffersons Birth.
The Memorial cost over $3 million, and is made of marble from Vermont, Tennessee as well Georgia. The ceiling is constructed of Indiana Limestone. After the Memorial was opened, a 19 foot bronze statue of Jefferson was added. The walls were carved and engraved with passages from some of Jeffersons most famous writings around the same time that the statue was added.
The Jefferson Memorial is open all year round but is closed on Christmas Day. There is a Museum located in the lobby. A Bookstore and restrooms are located in the basement. The Memorial is nearby to many of Washington DC's landmarks and is a great stop for a group that is taking a charter bus tour of the DC area. |

Washington Monument, Washington DC
|
George Washington, our First President deserves a big, grand tribute and that's why we have the Washington Monument. "The Father of Our Country", Washington took office in 1789 and helped form a govenrment that has lasted for over 200 years.
Construction on the Monument began in 1848 and was not actually completed until 1884, delays included budget issues as well as the outbreak of the Civil War. This is shown on the outer facade which is clearly faced with two different shades of marble.
The shape eventually decided upon for the Monument was an obelisk, a design made famous by the ancient Egyptians. The original site chosen turned out to be too swampy to hold the enormous, marble, granite and stone structure, which eventually weighed over 40,000 tons. When completed the Monument was actually the tallest building in the world standing at over 555 feet tall. Because of a law, it will at least always remain the tallest building in Washington DC. An elevator system eventually replaced the some 890 steps that where used to climb to the top.
Tickets are free, but entry is first come first serve. On site are a Bookstore, restrooms and food and beverage concessions. The Washington Monument is just one of the many sights to see in Washington DC, for a large group or family its a comfortable and inexpensive idea to take a bus charter trip and bring a real comfortable pair of walking shoes. |

The Lincoln Memorial Washington DC
|
A Landmark of the United States and a tribute to one of the Country's best presidents, the Lincoln memorial is located on the National Mall; 23rd St, NW Washington DC. The memorial is not only a dedicated to President Lincoln but the architecture is based on the Parthenon at Athens and a tribute to the accomplishments of the ancient Greeks.
It was opened May 30, 1922 after a long and difficult building process that took over 8 years. The building was designed by architect Henry Bacon, the stone carvings by famed sculptor Daniel Chester French and artist Jules Guerin. While there was disagreement amongst the designers about the exact meaning of the memorial, they came together to create a building and statue that represent all that Lincoln meant to the country. The designers, by incorporating Greek architecture were celebrating Democracy and the President that strove to protect the American institution of Democracy.
The grand statue of Lincoln sitting in his chair overlooking visitors is made of White Georgia Marble and stands over 19 feet tall and 19 feet wide. Rumors are abound about secret carvings or meanings of the statue. One rumor has it that a relief of the face of Robert E Lee is carved into the back of the Presidents head.
In the interior of the Mememorial are carvings of President Lincolns speeches, the Gettysburg is carved into the south wall of the mememorial. His famous inaugural Address is carved into the North wall.
When taking a charter bus group to Washington DC for a visit, its best to spend a few days and take in all the landmarks and sights the capital has to offer. Most everything is in walking distance, so bring comfortable shoes! |

There weren't many major renovations, except for the addition of lights for night games until 1976 when the ball park received a major facelift. The new ballpark was a mix of the old and new, keeping the classic lines of the old park while adding elevators and more seating. Yankee stadium has been the home to over 33 World Series, with the Yankees winning 26 of them , its no wonder they also call it "The Home of Champions".
You'll have to get there soon though because construction will be starting on a brand new Yankee Stadium in a lot across from the present ballpark, slated to open in 2009 the new park will rival the newest ballparks built around the country.
