Kennywood, West Mifflin Pennsylvania
|
For some reason, I thought this would be a theme park dedicated to Kenny Rogers the singer; like Dollywood. Fortunately I was wrong, Kennywood has been in operation since 1898, and is no way related to Kenny Rogers but it is known for great family entertainment. A mixture of the old and modern amusement park, Kennywood was designated a National Landmark in 1987.
If you're a true fan of roller coasters than you'll know the name Phantom's Revenge. One of the worlds fastest roller coasters, this coaster reaches heights of over 230 feet and travels at speeds of 80 miles per hour. The Thunderbolt is a classic wooden roller coaster that in parts dates back to 1924 and reaches a top speed of over 50 mph.
With the hot eastern summers there are plenty of water rides at Kennywood to keep the entire family cool and wet. The Log Jammer is a log flume ride that takes riders over 1600 feet of water coaster track with a 50 plus foot splash down at the end that soaks both riders as well as on lookers. The entire family can get a soaking in the five person rafts of Raging Rapids, a white water rapids ride complete with waterfalls and geysers.
Kennywood was one of the first amusement parks to have a section just for kids; the tradition continues to this day with a mini park just for the little ones featuring rides and games sized just right to keep them busy.
Kennywood offers discounts for groups of 20 or more as well as seniors, making it a great value for a bus charter day trip to Pennsylvania for any church, school, company or boy/scout pack. Call 412-464-9931 for details. |
